Father’s Day Weekend 2023 and my 10yr HS Reunion

This past weekend I traveled to my hometown of San Diego to attend my 10-year (and first) 2013 class reunion. Coincidentally, the reunion was the day before Father’s Day which meant there were now two reasons to come to San Diego!

I’ve been road biking for a few years now. During the Arizona summers, it’s pretty warm so I take any opportunity I can to get out on the road bike in cooler weather. Also, my dad recently got into the sport so if felt like an opportune time to bring my bike out and go for a ride for Father’s Day. Even better, my girlfriend Sofia (who is a spin instructor) drove out with me with her bike as well.

We biked the coast of California. Starting near Torrey Pines state beach and riding up to Leucadia. That was my old stomping ground when I lived just a few blocks away from Grandview Beach. It was about 23 miles in total with gentle hills. A nice leisurely ride for a Saturday! (My dad disagreed)

Later that evening, Sofia and I traveled to The Sinclair, an event venue in downtown San Diego.

Quoting Dan Hardiman, “It’s like everyone pokemon evolved.” Everyone was still instantly recognizable, but now grown up. Guys now have facial hair, some people lost their baby fat, etc. 10 years later looked really good on just about everyone that came to the reunion. One disappointing fact is the relatively low attendance. Out of the 600ish members of our class and the class above us (joint reunion), roughly 90 people showed up. I recognize this is probably due to it being our first event. People like myself have deleted their Facebook accounts making it difficult to reach. I just hope that more people come to the next reunion. For the people that came, it was great to see them, even if we weren’t particularly close in highschool. Thanks to the organizers of the event for making it happen. The venue, food, drinks, and all aspects of the venue were perfect!

Finally, father’s day arrived and my grandparents came to visit for brunch. Pictured below are three generations of Derbiques. See the resemblance?

My grandparents were asking about a 4th generation. That’s when I said I’m the dog father of Ringo, my girlfriend’s Labradoodle! He’s such a sweet boy.

It was a pretty great weekend. Quality time with my dad, getting to show Sofia the Gaslamp area on a Saturday night, and reconnecting with dozens of my former classmates. Back to Arizona now. Later, SD!
