After finishing Kilimanjaro faster than I anticipated, I had a few extra days to go explore. Booked a last minute flight to Zanzibar and was so happy I did. A great relaxing end to my Tour de Tanzania!

Uhuru Peak, the highest peak on the African continent and the largest freestanding mountain in the world. Living near sea level, the 19340ft summit of mt Kilimanjaro kicked my ass. All actions above 16k ft were done in slow-mo. I’ve safely descended in altitude and completed the hiking portion of my trip. Time for a beer!

It’s about time to embark on a solo journey to one of the earliest known locations of man – Tanzania. This has been my most challenging trip in terms of logistics, especially with the delta variant being a looming concern. But fingers crossed everything goes to plan and I’ll be state state side in September!

Beer mile was a success! Managed to take 3rd place. Four 7% ABV IPAs and one mile in 7:34. Over two minutes shaved off from my time two years ago!

Mother Nature had it in for us. Friday morning (3am) we were emergency evacuated from our campsite due to a wildfire just a few miles away. Without any of our gear and unable to return to our camp, our group twiddled thumbs hoping there would be containment on the fire soon. Fortunately, firefighters got the situation under control and we returned to camp that evening, preparing for Whitney the next day. The hike up Whitney was beautiful. No clouds, no wind, and blue skies. It was gorgeous. Everything above 14,000ft was a bit of an ass kicking with the thin air. Coming down the mountain on Sunday, there was more smoke, but this time from a different location than the Friday wildfire. Turns out another lightning storm had caused a new wildfire, this time extremely close to the Whitney portal. We were emergency evacuated yet again… two times in three days. I feel extremely fortunate for the opportunity to hike Whitney. I know a lot of permits were cancelled this weekend. Anyways, it was a great trip with some great people. Glad we made it out safe.
